Alys Tomlinson EX-VOTO

Alys Tomlinson, Sony World Photographer of the Year 2018, is to publish a book of her acclaimed series Ex-Voto. Selected from over 300,000 entries, she is only the second British photographer in the award’s history to scoop the major prize. The Ex-Voto series was also awarded 1 Prize in the Discovery Category of the Sony World Photography Awards and shortlisted for the British Journal of Photography IPA, Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize, and Renaissance Photography Prize.

The series explores the Christian pilgrimage sites of Lourdes (France), Ballyvourney (Ireland) and Grabarka (Poland). An ex-voto is an offering of religious devotion and the project images encompass formal portraiture, large format landscape and small, detailed still-life images of the objects and markers left behind. Shot on 5×4, large format film, the images evoke a distinct stillness and reflect the mysterious, timeless quality present at these sites of great spiritual contemplation.

“These are quiet images, beautifully produced, with a calm, spiritual feel that is at odds with so much of our frenetic lives. The idea of pilgrimage as a journey of discovery and sacrifice to a greater power has been illustrated so sensitively by Alys that she quickly became our choice of overall winner.”

Mike Trow, Chair, Professional Competition, Sony World Photography Awards 2018.

The book, designed by renowned book designer Stu Smith, features over 40 black and white images, many of them not seen before. The series will be published by GOST Books with essays by The Guardian writer Sean O’Hagan and Professor John Eade, University of Roehampton.

Juries announced for the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards

The World Photography Organisation is delighted to announce the juries of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s most diverse photography competition. To mark the occasion, a selection of entries to the Open competition are released, and the Chair of Judges offers advice to potential entrants.

The World Photography Organisation today also publishes the opening list of participating countries for 2019’s National Awards. A longstanding part of the Sony World Photography Awards, the National Awards provide the unique opportunity for entrants of all levels, from more than 50 countries, to be recognized in an internationally renowned photography competition.

Now in its 12th year, the Sony World Photography Awards celebrate the finest contemporary photography from the past 12 months across all genres of the medium. All entries are free at www.worldphoto.org/swpa.

Expert juries seeking the world’s finest contemporary photography

The 2019 juries specially selected by the World Photography Organisation are all experts working across the photographic industry. This year’s panel, who will judge series across 10 categories of the Professional competition, consists of industry leaders from across the world:

  • Erin Barnett, Director of Exhibitions and Collections, International Center of Photography (USA)
  • Brendan Embser, Managing Editor, Aperture (USA)
  • Olivier Laurent, Foreign Photo Editor, The Washington Post (USA)
  • Emma Lewis, Assistant Curator, Tate (UK)
  • Isabella van Marle, Head of Exhibitor Relations, Unseen (The Netherlands)
  • Chair: Mike Trow, editor, photographer, producer (UK)

Chair Mike Trow comments:“It is an honor to be asked to be Chair of Judges for the Sony World Photography Awards’ Professional competition. What makes the Sony World Photography Awards so exciting is the range of subjects and global reach of the stories and images selected. My advice for entrants is to choose your categories carefully and believe in your story. Show how you see the world, and avoid cliché. Photography techniques and styles are getting more adventurous and dynamic, so technical excellence is also necessary. To impress this world-leading panel of judges will take your best output, and the ability to edit your work so it is coherent, dynamic and beautiful.”

The Open competition, judged on a single image across 10 categories, will be chaired by Rebecca McClelland, Photography Director & Head of Art Production for Saatchi Saatchi & Prodigious (UK), who we are delighted will also chair the Youth and National Awards competitions. This year’s Student competition will also be judged by 3 further leading judges from the international photography industry – Jason Baron, Creative Director of Photography, BBC Creative (UK); Bruno Bayley, Managing Editor, Magnum Photos (UK) and Jeff Hamada, Founder & Editor, BOOOOOOOM (Canada)

Inspiring images from across the Open competition

Following a record-breaking number of entries in 2018*, the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards have already received thousands of diverse and exceptional images from across the world. Sony World Photography Awards

Sony World Photography Awards launches its 2019 edition with new categories and announces latest Sony Grant winner

The World Photography Organisation today opens the 12th edition of the Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s most diverse photography competition. To celebrate its continued presence as a leading global photography competition, the Awards reveal the latest recipients of the Sony Grant, from previous Award winners, and announces three new categories for 2019.

Created by the World Photography Organisation, the Sony World Photography Awards are an authoritative voice in the industry. Celebrating the best contemporary photography from the past year, the Awards give vast exposure, visibility, and opportunity to photographers worldwide on an annual basis. Sony supports the Awards to help the continued development of photographic culture throughout the world, celebrating the best of past and present practitioners, as well as giving a global platform to today’s talent. Submissions to the Awards are free at www.worldphoto.org.

Speaking of her experience upon winning the overall title at the 2018 Awards, Alys Tomlinson said: “Being named Photographer of the Year means a huge amount to me. It’s wonderful to be recognized for what I do, for what I am so committed and passionate about. Having worked on the ‘Ex-Voto’ series for five years, winning this Award has opened up and emphasized the centrality of pilgrimage to us all.”

New categories:

Photographers worldwide are invited to submit to the Awards’ four competitions: Professional, outstanding bodies of work between 5-10 images across ten categories; Open, rewarding the world’s best single images across ten categories, Youth, a single brief for emerging talent aged 12-19, and Student, for photography students across the globe. The National Awards program will also reward local photographic talent. The 2019 Awards is marked by the introduction of two challenging new categories in the Professional competition: Brief and Documentary. The brief will test photographers abilities to compose a body of work on a specific theme. The inaugural theme of this category is ‘Identity’. The documentary is a new category for bodies of work portraying facts about a chosen subject, giving insight into contemporary issues and news. In choosing these new categories, the Awards hopes to continue appealing to a diverse range of contemporary photographers. In the Open competition, a new Creative category has been introduced and the Awards welcome Culture Trip and Eurostar as category partners.

Sony Grant:

Introduced in 2016, Sony Grants provide previous Award winners with further opportunities to develop and display their works and establish an ongoing relationship with Sony after the Awards. The recipients are chosen by Sony* from the winning and shortlisted photographers of the Awards’ Professional and Student competitions. The 2018 Sony Grant recipients are announced today as Alys Tomlinson (UK), Luca Locatelli (Italy), Tom Oldham (UK) and Balazs Gardi (Hungary). Each receives $7,000 (USD)  to develop a project of their own over the next year, with the resulting images being exhibited at the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London. The 2018 Student Sony Grant recipients are revealed as Morgan Mulholland (South Africa), Anshul Mehrotra (India) and Cao Hongmei (China). Each student will receive $3,500 (USD) to develop a collaborative project set by Sony and the World Photography Organisation which will also be exhibited in London. A further round of Sony Grants has been confirmed for the winning and shortlisted photographers of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards.

New images from the recipients of the 2017 Sony Grants – Frederik Buyckx, George Mayer, Yuan Peng and Will Burrard-Lucas alongside students Sarah Schrimpf, Tatsuki Katayama, and Shravya Kag – are available at www.worldphoto.org/press.

2019 prizes and deadlines:

Photographers have until November 30, 2018 to enter the Student competition, January 4, 2019 for the Open and Youth competitions, and January 11, 2019 for Professional. Full competition and categories descriptions can be found at www.worldphoto.org/swpa.

Les Rencontres d’Arles 2018. Robert Frank

Robert Frank, one of the best photojournalists of all times, is exposing in Arles until September 23rd

Frank was bormber 23rd.n in Switzerland. His mother was named Rosa Franks and his father was named Hermann Frank. Robert Frank states in Gerald Fox’s 2005 documentary Leaving Home, Coming Home that his mother, Rosa (other sources state her name as Regina), had a Swiss passport, while his father, Hermann originating from Frankfurt, Germany had become stateless after losing his German citizenship as a Jew. They had to apply for the Swiss citizenship of Robert and his older brother, Manfred. Though Frank and his family remained safe in Switzerland during World War II, the threat of Nazism nonetheless affected his understanding of oppression. He turned to photography, in part as a means to escape the confines of his business-oriented family and home, and trained under a few photographers and graphic designers before he created his first hand-made book of photographs, 40 Fotos, in 1946. Frank emigrated to the United States in 1947, and secured a job in New York City as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar. He soon left to travel in South America and Europe. He created another hand-made book of photographs that he shot in Peru, and returned to the U.S. in 1950. That year was momentous for Frank, who, after meeting Edward Steichen, participated in the group show 51 American Photographers at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); he also married fellow artist Mary Frank née Mary Lockspeiser, with whom he had two children, Andrea and Pablo.[2]

Though he was initially optimistic about the United States’ society and culture, Frank’s perspective quickly changed as he confronted the fast pace of American life and what he saw as an overemphasis on money. He now saw America as an often bleak and lonely place, a perspective that became evident in his later photography. Frank’s own dissatisfaction with the control that editors exercised over his work also undoubtedly colored his experience. He continued to travel, moving his family briefly to Paris. In 1953, he returned to New York and continued to work as a freelance photojournalist for magazines including McCall’s, Vogue, and Fortune. Associating with other contemporary photographers such as Saul Leiter and Diane Arbus, he helped form what Jane Livingston has termed The New York School of photographers (not to be confused with the New York School of art) during the 1940s and 1950s.

Skylum Ambassador Team

Skylum adds four globe-trotting landscape photographers to its ambassador team

World-famous landscape photographers Iurie Belegurschi, Daniel Kordan, Max Rive, and Dr. Kah-Wai Lin join Skylum’s ambassador team

Skylum has teamed up with four all-star landscape photographers from around the globe to help hone its software vision and make Luminar and Aurora HDR the best post-production solutions for landscape photography.

Iurie BelegurschiDaniel KordanMax Rive, and Dr. Kah-Wai Lin join Jerry GhionisMatthew Jordan SmithJoel Grimes, and Dixie Dixon to bring Skylum’s ambassador team to a total of eight photographers. The four new Skylum ambassadors live and travel around the globe, capturing the most beautiful and unique photographs of nature our world has to offer.

Ambassadors Belegurschi, Kordan, Rive, and Lin are working alongside Skylum to make products better fit the needs of landscape and travel photographers around the globe and judge an awesome collection of photography contests, including those currently taking place, for which the grand prize is a free trip with Iceland Photo Tours. There will also be various speaking engagements put on by the ambassadors, as well as future photowalks and meet ups with the photography community to help spread the word about how Luminar and Aurora HDR are changing the world of post-production in landscape photography.

Iurie Belegurschi

Although born in Moldova, Iurie Belegurschi has spent the last twelve years calling the Nordic countryside of Iceland his home. Inspired by the incredible light and landscapes, Belegurschi has spent over a decade capturing the beautiful scenes and seascapes, resulting in photos that have won international accolades, and adorned the pages of leading publications and exhibitions. In 2012, Iurie founded Iceland Photo Tours, which serves as a way for Iurie to share his expertise of Iceland and its terrain with passionate photographers from around the world.

“I’m beyond excited to join Skylum’s talented team of ambassadors to help shape the programs that ensure I spend less time in front of a computer and more time behind a camera on a photo adventure.” — Iurie Belegurschi

Daniel Kordan

Even if the name Daniel Kordan fails to ring a bell, don’t be surprised if you recognize a photograph or two of his. Known for incredible landscapes, Kordan’s work has been published in National Geographic, Discovery, and Photography Week — not to mention Skylum’s own product page a time or two. His growing list of clients including Apple and Red Bull, and as of late Kordan also teaches courses to photographers from all over the world on how to find their unique style and inspiration in nature.

“It’s great to be a part of Skylum alongside an incredible lineup of photographers from around the world. I’m excited to bring my vision and expertise to the table to help Skylum develop its software to better suit the needs of landscape photographers.” — Daniel Kordan

Max Rive

It wasn’t until 2008, when Max Rive first picked up a camera to document a mountain trip, that he became ingrained in the world of photography. In the decade since, Rive has won International Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2017 and travelled the world capturing beautiful landscape shots in Chile, Argentina, Greenland, Sweden, Scotland, Norway, New Zealand, and beyond.

“Luminar is great in that it enables me to process my photos exactly how I envision them in my head through the cleverly curated toolset and growing collection of filters. It’s great to be a part of the Skylum team and I’m excited to help push the programs further and connect with the Skylum community.” — Max Rive

Kah-Wai Lin

As if an M.D. degree from Lviv National Medical University in Ukraine and a Ph.D. degree in medical science from Karolinska Institute in Sweden wasn’t enough, Kah-Wai Lin can also add an award-winning portfolio of incredible landscapes photographs to the resume. Dr. Lin has explored and photographed some of the most diverse and remote places on Earth, visiting over 30 countries and winning more than 200 awards, along the way. His accolades include 1st place at the International Photography Award 2015 and being named one of the top 10 exhibitors in the world by Photographic Society of America in both 2015 and 2016.

“I’m very much looking forward to join the Skylum team of ambassadors. It’ll serves as a great opportunity to connect with Skylum users spanning the globe. Luminar has quickly become my go-to photo editing software by taking the stress out of post-processing, making it faster and easier than any other program I’ve used.” — Kah-Wai Lin

Affinity Designer for iPad

Affinity Designer for iPad today brings professional vector graphic design to the iPad for the first time.

Developed with input from a team of leading professional graphic designers and based on Apple Design Award-winning technology, Affinity Designer is the most ambitious creative app developed for iPad. The app was launched today during an event at developer Serif’s Nottingham, UK, headquarters (6pm BST). And for a limited period, Affinity Designer for iPad is on sale in the App Store for only £13.99 / $13.99 / 14,99€ with no subscription – a discount of 30% on the full price (subject to local currency variations).

Serif’s Managing Director Ashley Hewson says: “Affinity Designer for iPad takes all the power and precision of our desktop version and converts it into a truly stunning immersive experience. “We’ve packed everything you’d expect from professional design software into an app that you can just pick up and take wherever you go, totally free from the confines of your desk or even your office.Hewson says developing Affinity Designer for iPad meant totally reimagining the way graphic design works on a screen. “We’ve spent months working closely with influential artists, illustrators and designers to fine-tune the development of the app. Their input really helped us rise to the huge challenge of bringing a full graphic design experience to iPad, which means this is an app with proven professional requirements at its core.”

Affinity Designer for iPad’s velvet-smooth vector tools means curves have pinpoint precision. From initial sketches to fleshing out a design in vector, to handing off for professional print or web, it has the workflow covered, all in one place. Professional performance demands the ability to operate seamlessly with your fellow pros. So Affinity Designer’s modern, powerful export engine covers all the major file types, whether a project is destined for print, online or another app. In a real game-changer for vector drawing, pencil stabilization allows you to produce the smoothest and most accurate lines possible, drawing using freehand pencil and brush tools. The astonishing ability to zoom by well over one million percent ensures complete accuracy in your work, every time.

Affinity Designer for iPad is unique in offering the opportunity to switch seamlessly from vector to raster work. With around 100 brushes built in, to cover pretty much every requirement, it’s simple to add rich media texture to your designs. Naturally, Affinity Designer for iPad is optimized for the very latest iPad technology including intuitive multi-touch gestures. The iPad’s advanced Metal graphics processing delivers unreal speed and lag-free real-time edits, even on the biggest files. Apple Pencil dynamics like tilt, angle, pressure and more help bring smoothness and stability to your curves and colors. Using the Drag & Drop feature of the iPad’s Files app enables you to bring projects in and out of the app at a touch. Hewson adds: “Affinity apps are tailored for today’s technology … that means they’re fast, powerful and precise, with total lack of bloat. On iPad, the powerful graphics processing really helps us deliver eye-popping performance.”

Affinity Designer for iPad supports all major formats, 16-bit per channel editing, end-to-end CMYK, ICC color management and spot colors for professional printing. Boasting 22 non-destructive adjustment layers that preview instantly and can be edited any time, and with full support for masks, stacks and clipping layers, Affinity Designer for iPad offers the most advanced layer controls available in any vector-based app. Further, its unrivaled text engine puts the power to create exquisite typography at your fingertips.

Everything you need for end-to-end UI design workflow is on hand, including unlimited artboards, a powerful Symbols tool and full asset management. It works seamlessly with the desktop version (sold separately), which was given a coveted Apple Design Award in 2015. And it becomes the second Serif app for the Apple tablet – professional image editor Affinity Photo was unveiled at WWDC2017 and is Apple’s reigning iPad App of the Year.

After the discount period, Affinity Designer for iPad will be available priced £19.99 / $19.99 / 21,99€ subject to local currency variations). The same 30% discount is also being applied across Affinity’s range of apps and official Workbooks for a limited period.

Approved by professionals

The Serif developer team worked with leading artists and illustrators on the creation and testing of Affinity Designer for iPad, in a private VIP beta period designed to perfect the app for real-world uses. Quotes from some of them are below: David Sossella Illustrator and creative director “Affinity Designer for iPad is incredible, powerful and reliable. I love the way objects are managed and gestures have been implemented. It’s a great surprise to me to have such complete vector software on a mobile device, it’s something I’ve been waiting for.”

Steve Simpson Illustrator and graphic designer “Affinity Designer for iPad is a fully featured vector app with raster tools available on a tablet. It’s a different level.”

Matt Griffin Illustrator and author “I’m delighted that there is now an app like this available on iPad. Combining vector and raster tools, and with the addition of type, it has everything I need to work solely on the pad if required.”

Will Schorer Illustrator and graphic designer “I’m blown away with Affinity Designer for iPad. Having the freedom to work from a sketch to a finished vectorized artwork all without any cables, in one app is a dream come true and a huge time saver.”

Juan Manuel Orozco Illustrator and graphic designer “Discovering this app has been amazing, I’ve fallen in love. I can ink in vector and color in raster all in one portable app, with no layer limitations. It’s totally changed my workflow.”

B&W Artisan Pro just got updated to version 1.2

B&W Artisan Pro is an intuitive and easy to use Photoshop panel for advanced editing of B&W photographs, with powerful local adjustments features. Designed and developed by multi-award winning photographer Joel Tjintjelaar, whose signature style B&W photographs have inspired many photographers worldwide, to emulate his style.

With this panel Joel unlocks his advanced B&W editing techniques to a larger audience without the need to acquire the technical knowledge and years of experience, necessary to create high impact B&W photographs.

New Features

NEW LOAD AND OPTIMIZE MASK TO PREVENT AND ELIMINATE FRINGING

If you also struggle with halos and fringes around edges when masking objects – buildings specifically – even when you thought you just created the perfect mask and especially when pushing the contrast more than normal then v1.2 will give you a smart solution through 3 new ‘Load and optimize mask’ presets.
This new feature will eliminate annoying fringes/halos substantially, or, depending on the quality of your mask, completely. This takes place by applying an optimization automatically when loading a mask via the ‘load and optimize mask’ preset in the panel. And no pixels on the edges will be deleted, blurred, cloned, smudged or manipulated otherwise, as the optimization takes place before using the mask in an adjustment or a background replacement for example.
Have a look at the comparison photo above and the video with the optimization feature. Getting rid of halos around the edges of a building with the push of a button is actually easy, but the panel can do the same with the fringing on the intricate and very small cables on a panorama shot of the Brooklyn Bridge (see photo) and just as easy with leaves and branches of trees. But that’s just a small part of the new features I’m introducing.

OTHER IMPORTANT UPDATES
Elementary tasks, such as accurate and subtle darkening of local areas, are enabled by quick, free-form selections with a lasso tool, and then clicking a single preset that triggers a sequence of sometimes more than 100 custom-built steps. Local adjustments have never been faster and more intuitive than this.

Add to that features such as Local Micro Zone adjustments to easily isolate and adjust tonal details, also with fast carefree selections, B&W fine-art conversion presets, smart Mask Optimization to prevent fringing (v1.2) or adding subtle split tones using a unique method, and this panel becomes a must-have for the B&W artist who prefers creativity to complicated technical features.

UPDATED FEATURE: 16 NEW LUMINOSITY MASKS WITH HALF VALUES ADDED TO TOTAL 35 LUMINOSITY MASKS

Besides the already existing option to create 8 light, 8 dark and 3 mid-tone luminosity maks. It is now also possible to create 16 half luminosity masks for more tonal control.

UPDATED FEATURE: 2 NEW FINE ART PRESETS TO TOTAL 10 BLACK AND WHITE CONVERSIONS

The following presets are custom built presets, each one of them consisting of a sequence of various custom built and accurate adjustments I apply also in my own black and white workflow.

Fine art subtle | Fine art dramatic | Architecture subtle | Architecture dramatic | Neutral conversion | Low-key conversion | High-key conversion | High Contrast conversion | SE 1 | SE 2

A Free version of the panel is also available from the BW Vision website. It has fewer functionalities than the Pro version, but it will let you discover the power of this really good tool.

Final Thoughts

Again a really good Black & White conversion panel. For thise of you that have experience in using  film enlargers, it will remind you how to create perfect dodging and burning.  For a $35.00 | €28.45 list price, it really is a best buy.

New Aurora HDR 2018 update.

New Update to Aurora HDR 2018 Brings New Tools, Improved Performance, and Loupedeck+ Integration

Aurora HDR 2018 is now up to 2x and 4x faster on MacOS and Windows computers, respectively, and is now compatible with the brand-new Loupedeck+ photo editing console.

Skylum Software today released the latest update to its award-winning photo editing software, Aurora HDR, bringing improved performance, new features, and updated tools to both MacOS and Windows versions. Aurora HDR is now faster across the board with a massive boost in performance on both Windows and MacOS computers. Specifically, performance on MacOS computers is up 180% when working with bracketed shots and 175% when working with single images. On Windows computers, Aurora HDR is now 500% faster when working with bracketed shots and 400% for single images. Aurora HDR also makes better use of memory, with more intelligent management and improved stability.

“The team at Skylum has worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to bring massive speed and performance improvements to the Aurora HDR 2018 update for both MacOS and Windows computers. Combined with the support for recently-launched Loupedeck+, photographers who use Skylum’s products will be able to edit photos more efficiently than ever before. The faster photographers can import, process, and edit their photographs, the more time they can spend in the field or studio capturing shots,” said Dmitry Sytnik, Co-founder and CTO at Skylum.

Windows users, in particular, receive a new batch processing tool, bringing it more in line with its MacOS counterpart. Windows users get a refreshed interface, the ability to rename layers, histogram functionality in the tone curve filter, improved dodge and burn stability, and a flip/rotate tool.

On the flipside, Mac users receive improved plugin stability, increased export speeds, and improved memory management when batch processing images.Aurora HDR 2018 has also added support for more than a dozen new cameras. The full list includes:

Skylum also announces a partnership with Loupedeck to bring support for the brand-new Loupedeck+ photo editing console. Now, users can quickly process photos in Aurora HDR using physical dials, knobs and keys. “With similar goals to make the photo editing process more creative, intuitive and efficient, Loupedeck is thrilled to partner with Skylum on our journey to launch the Loupedeck+ editing console,” said Mikko Kesti, Founder and CEO of Loupedeck. “We’re confident the support of Skylum’s editing products will further enable today’s photographers to enjoy enhanced editing experiences and we look forward to continued delivery on this mission moving forward together.” The updated Loupedeck+ console features improved build quality, updated mechanical keys for a more precise feel, two customizable dials, and an all new “Custom Mode” that allows users full control of all dials.

“Skylum and Loupedeck share the same vision,” said Skylum CEO Alex Tsepko. “We want to help photographers create great photos, differently. When I discovered that the new version of Loupedeck keyboard is coming out, I knew Skylum software should be the first to support it. This is the kind of innovation modern photographers really need.”

Loupedeck is the only photo editing console custom-built to improve the Adobe Lightroom and Skylum Aurora HDR experience, with an intuitive design that makes editing faster and more creative. It allows both professional and amateur photographers to improve the ergonomics of editing, comfortably increasing output. Loupedeck’s hands-on and highly intuitive console minimizes the use the mouse and keyboard, and it works seamlessly with Apple and PC operating systems.
